Our cows

We are a family run farm and know each of our 120 cows. Careful breeding and animal husbandry produce milk high in butterfat and protein and tastes amazing! On average 2,000 Litres are produced each day. The milk which is not used in our vending machines for milkshakes and milk goes to Long Clawson Dairy to make Stilton cheese.

You will notice our cows have ankle bracelets. Not just a fashion accessory but this bit of technology is connected to the Cloud. Every time the cows come through the milking parlour, the bracelets provide invaluable data to help us maintain exactly the right diet for each cow to be in top physical condition.

During the spring and summer, our cows graze in the fields all of which have names. Such names as Muckleborough, Stonebush, and Coathills may date back to Roman times. We still have very pronounced ridge and furrow fields that evaded levelling in the second world war. The field names are displayed in our shop.

When the fields are cold and wet, the cows move into the spacious cow shed. Each cow has access to its own cubicle and comfy mattress. The floor of the shop is made from the same cow mattresses. A scratching brush is on hand to satisfy those itches. Some would say our cows are pampered!

The shop

Open every day 8am-8pm

The contactless vending machines supply 1 litre glass bottles, milk and milkshakes.

Our milkshakes are made from the award-winning JB Syrups created by Daisy Vending - a British manufacturer. The big decision is what milkshake flavour to try! The popular flavours of chocolate, strawberry and banana are always available. A further 3 flavours are available and these will change regularly.

You may be able to sample cream egg, salted caramel, mint choc chip, white chocolate, raspberry or plain vanilla.

Here’s a couple of things to remember when using our farm vending machines:

  • Refrigerate your milk as soon as possible and keep below 4°C
  • If left overnight in the fridge, the cream will rise to the top. This cream is a true luxury in coffee or on cereal, but you can shake the bottle to gently disperse the cream within the milk.
  • We look forward to seeing you again! If you are able to reuse the Village Farm Dairy glass bottle, we recommend it is sterilised in your dishwasher.

Village Farm beyond cows!

Our 2 X 20 KW wind turbines and 49 KW PV panels mounted on the shed roofs supply most of the electricity used on the farm with all the spare exported to the grid.

A bore hole provides drinking water for our herd. Each cow can drink up to 35 gallons a day, so the borehole is a massive saving on costs.

We are proud to have one of the lowest carbon foot prints for a dairy farm in our area. By purchasing our milk and using glass bottles you could be helping to reduce the carbon footprint!

Happy weekend everyone! Apologies for being quiet on here over the last few weeks, I’ve been poorly but work on the farm never stops! We have had our second open weekend with the Village Farm Butchery which was another amazing weekend and we have more ideas on expanding!

Out of interest comment below on how many would be interested in buying Fruit/Veg/Bread from us too? We are looking into local farmers/Bakeries about providing us with a delivery once or twice a week (depending on popularity.

Let us know below! Don’t forget to collect your milk/milkshakes/eggs and honey from the shop this weekend!

I would, dependant on the price. I am addicted to sourdough bread, so that would be good. It is good to support local small businesses and not rely so much on supermarkets and huge manufacturers. I hope you are well now. Take care and keep up the great work 👍

Sourdough definitely yes please and prob fruit and veg

If everything is as good as the milk then definitely would be yes

We'd be interested, especially if you sold fresh bread 🍞

Local fresh fruit and veg definitely, sourdough bread too.

If the fruit, veg and bread (sourbread please 😁)is as good as the eggs at a decent price then 100%yes👍🏾

About us

Village Farm is now in its fourth generation of producing milk on our family run farm. The passion for rearing healthy happy cows and good quality milk has been the main focus since the Dixons took on the farm in 1936. Our herd of 120 Montbeliard crossed Friesian cows enjoy the lush pasture land for at least 6 months of the year. During the winter months, they are able to rest in their own cubicles in the cow shed or wander into the yard to enjoy the fresh air and munch on primarily home grown food.

Our cows in the shed, enjoying hay which helps make our tasty Village Farm Dairy milk and milkshakes

Our family love the taste of fresh farm milk and are delighted to give the opportunity for others to experience it too! At our shop overlooking the yard, you can purchase a glass bottle, some milk or delicious milkshake from the contactless vending machines. At certain times, you will even be able to watch the cows wander past the shop window as they enjoy a back scratch after being milked.
